Hypoallergenic Jewelry is made from materials less likely to cause an adverse skin reaction. Any metal mixture of 2 or more metals is called an alloy. Elements are alloyed to achieve different properties such as strength, malleability, durability, tarnish-resistance and sometimes just color preference. Some pure metals, such as silver, are too soft in their pure elemental state and bend and scratch quite easily. So Jewelers will add 2 different metals together to strengthen the metal. The result is a metal alloy called sterling silver which is much harder. To make sterling silver you would alloy 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% copper to achieve a stronger more durable metal.
